About Jeff Downer
b. Vancouver, BC

Jeff Downer’s photographs capture the surreal and humorous oddities of everyday life through astute observations. Looking for potency in ordinary and peripheral environments, he is drawn to isolated communities, boom and bust towns, the mundane, and neglected urban landscapes that we might encounter daily but tend to overlook. Sunset is of a ragged curtain shot in the bathroom of a rundown house inhabited by punks. Downer effectively transforms the abject gossamer fabric into a dreamy and mysterious scene, calling attention to the interplay between photographic effects and what is pictured. This photograph relates to Downer’s ongoing concern with portraying exclusion: being on the outside of something looking into a veiled space.

Jeff Downer lives in Vancouver. He received a BFA in Photography from Emily Carr College of Art & Design and studied at Massachusetts College of Art & Design, Boston. Exhibiting since 2007, his most recent exhibitions were Objects of My Affection at CSA Space, Fort Gallery, Parker Street Studios, and Project Duplex. He has participated in several residencies, most recently at the Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo, Japan; Or Gallery in Vancouver, and the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montréal. His work with lens-based images extends into printed matter and artist publications, including an artist book (to be published by Edna Press, London, Ontario) in collaboration with a writer inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Under Western Eyes and a self-published artist book, Handsome Rewards.
