About Elizabeth Zvonar
b. 1972, Thunder Bay, ON

Elizabeth Zvonar often draws from fashion and luxury goods magazines, taking carefully manicured images of glamour and fragmenting them into strange, surreal arrangements, liberated from consumer culture. This intricately constructed photograph reveals Zvonar’s skillful photo-collage technique. Storyteller claims the faceted, mirrored backdrop of a Louis Vuitton shoe ad as the realm of an oracle-like figure, collaged from bird photographs in nature publications. The owl’s spoons could imply feats of spoon-bending telekinesis or a cosmetic beauty ritual, playing at the porous divisions between dreams, desire, and fantasy.

Elizabeth Zvonar is a Vancouver artist working primarily with mixed-media collage and sculpture. She holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art & Design (2002). She was the 2015 recipient of the Shadbolt Foundation’s VIVA Award. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and internationally in New York, Australia, Japan, and Belgium. I Spy, a solo exhibition of Zvonar’s work, was at The Polygon in 2020. Zvonar is represented by Daniel Faria Gallery, Toronto.
